Owner Spotlight : Wilma Kulyk
Hi, I’m Wilma Kulyk, proud owner of Sensational SEAMS.
I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
I grew up in Bowmanville, Ontario. I graduated from Bowmanville High School then attended Durham College in Oshawa.
My sewing journey began when I was in Grade 9. My home economics teacher, Mrs. Michelajko, noticed my natural gift for sewing and helped me develop my skills. In Grade 11, I had developed my abilities sufficiently to sew my first wedding dress. Given this success, I went on to do a lot of intricate, involved bridal work. After a few years of bridal couture and party wear, I naturally gravitated toward window treatments and enrolled in courses in window treatment procedures, interior design, paint, and paper colour. After completing my education, I started Sensational SEAMS in 1986.
Today, we are a family owned business. Our showroom and workroom studio is located in Newcastle, ON. We provide custom window treatment solutions and interior design services as well as kitchen and bathroom renovations.
The most enjoyable part of my work is speaking with clients to understand their vision. I love the challenge of providing the best possible solution and adding unique, creative value. I work with our customers from the initial phone call to the final installation. I am involved with scheduling appointments, guiding clients through their design requirements, creating custom sewing projects, and working with my contractors for every other aspect of the project.
I have achieved several milestones in my career. I won the first place in the Great Window Covering Challenge across Canada, a competition involving designing treatments for arch, bay and other challenging window shapes. I am also the proud recipient of the Creative Custom Design Award and Sales Leader of the Year. I present seminars across Canada that have led to the exceptional growth of Sensational SEAMS.
I attribute my success to my husband, Jamie. He has cheered me all the way and encouraged me to break out of my shell and become a confident person. Since we started the business, my mother has also been a great source of encouragement. The mentorship I’ve received from my teacher, Mrs. Michelajko, and other leaders in the industry including Sharon Moonlight and Sally Morse have also played an important role in my success. I have also acquired amazing results through my business membership with Exciting Windows.
I admire companies like Mini Blind King and Southern Traditions. Richard Bernath, a design consultant at Southern Traditions, and Tom Miller, a business manager at Mini Blind King are two people who have taught me so much about customer service, good morals, ethics, and the importance of praising God for all that He has gifted me.
When I’m not working, I love taking photographs, creating photo album memories and entertaining family and friends on our property.
I am a strong supporter of local causes in my community. I have used my talents to steer a "Refresh the Church" project at our own church. Our committee of amazing women has worked together to create an updated space with new window treatments, flooring, painting, and furniture. I also support the Christian schools with window treatment services.
I value the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus, my Saviour. I also value our church, Christian education and a good solid mentorship with family and friends.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our expertise in custom window treatment solutions, interior design as well as kitchen and bathroom renovations, I invite you to get in touch.
Sincerely,
Wilma Kulyk
